Frizz-Free Hair: How to Tame Your Frizzy Hair

Frizz-Free Hair: How to Tame Your Frizzy Hair

Let’s talk frizz. Where does it come from? Why does it exist? And why is it always getting in the way of the perfect hair day? Whether it is caused by humidity, dryness, or damage, frizz happens as a result of your hair trying to absorb moisture. When your hair is thirsty or damaged, the cuticle layer that normally lies flat is raised to try to drink in moisture more easily. This raising contributed to the swelled, fluffy look we associate with frizz.

What causes frizz?

HUMIDITY

Humidity and excess moisture in the air is what normally comes to mind when thinking of frizzy hair. According to our in-house chemist & formulation specialist, Meagan, “When the content of water in the air is higher due to increased humidity, water molecules from the atmosphere come into contact with hair much more frequently. Hair is porous — especially chemically-damaged hair — and will try to absorb that moisture. Once it swells, the water molecules can access the keratin chains inside of the hair strand, and then more and more hydrogen bonds will form between keratin and water. This causes hair strands to fold back on themselves, kink up, and bam! The result is the appearance of frizz.” Your strands are actually swelling from the excess moisture.

DRYNESS

Another common cause of frizzy hair is dryness. Dry hair longs for moisture, and once exposed to moisture, the cuticle will open itself up to grab a drink. This is why naturally curly or wavy hair tends to frizz more easily. These hair types have the tendency to be dry because it is difficult for the natural oils from the scalp to make it to the ends.

DAMAGE

Like we mentioned above, overprocessed, damaged hair will often become frizzy due to the high porosity of this hair. Habits like constant heat styling, shampooing too often, and lightening the hair tend to damage hair and lead to frizz. Meagan explains this too, “Anything that causes damage to the hair cuticle (like the friction from towel drying or brushing) can make hair more prone to frizz because it disrupts the water-repelling seal naturally occurring in hair. This increases hair porosity and therefore sensitivity to/absorption of water.” Very porous hair has gaps and holes in the cuticle, which will absorb too much moisture and leave it prone to frizz and tangling.
